The big strength of Tonality and programs like it is that it does two things not one. It gives you a broad selection of preset image effects to inspire you with new ‘looks’ for its photos, but it also gives you all the manual tools you need to create and modify these for yourself.

Tonality is MacPhun’s black and white editor and you can get Tonality on its own from the – for just a few days until April 14th it’s half price a just £7.99 – or as part of the suite from the MacPhun website. The App Store version keeps the price down with in-app purchases, but one of these – batch processing – is also free until April 14th. If you’ve got Tonality already the update is free, and you’ll be prompted to install it the next time you open the program. What’s new is the ability to install free, professionally-designed presets from the MacPhun website.

At the moment it has presets from photographers Serge Ramelli, John Batdorff, Dan Hughes and Andy Kruczek, but MacPhun says more are to follow. I’ve tried them out and I like them a lot (the fact that they’re free helps, of course). The shot above is one of mine with the Classic BW preset from John Batdorff’s Travel set. Tonality is MacPhun’s black and white editor, though you can also create colour effects too. It’s kind of like MacPhun’s answer to Silver Efex Pro.

I think I still prefer the Nik Software for black and white, but Tonality is catching up fast, and while Google’s decision to make the free is great news in the short term, I’m a bit worried about its long-term future. Filed Under:, Reader Interactions.
